We’re proud to introduce the inaugural edition of The State of Digital Accessibility report, a first-of-its-kind look into how state tourism websites measure up when it comes to inclusive, accessible digital experiences.
In an increasingly digital world, where 28.7% of the U.S. population lives with a disability, ensuring that online platforms are accessible to everyone is more critical than ever. This is especially true in the travel and tourism industry, where the goal is to connect with and welcome all travelers. It’s crucial that destination marketing organizations (DMOs) provide easily accessible information across their digital platforms, including their official websites.
This report takes a comprehensive look at the current state of digital accessibility across all 50 U.S. state DMO websites. By combining AI-powered testing with expert human analysis, we evaluated each homepage’s compliance with the latest Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 A and AA standards; these guidelines are the gold standard for ensuring online content is accessible for all users, including those with disabilities. Our results uncover key trends, explore persistent challenges and identify actionable steps DMOs can take to improve digital accessibility in their websites.
What You'll Find in the Report:
- An overview of the accessibility landscape for state tourism websites
- Insights into the most common issues, from color contrast and missing alternative text to navigational barriers
- Actionable recommendations for creating more inclusive, accessible online experiences
This report is designed to support DMOs, web developers and all those shaping digital visitor experiences. Whether you’re just getting started or refining your accessibility strategy, our findings will help guide your next steps.
